Newsletter Spring 2024 - Dear Friends & Supporters

Updated: Oct 17

We hope this finds you in good spirits and enjoying this beautiful Spring, showers and all.

As this reaches you, we are still responding to the events in the Middle East, and continue to add to our list of beneficiaries suffering in Palestine, Belarus and Ukraine alongside our list in Africa.

We need your help more than ever and any donation, however small, is welcome.

A little goes a long way in some of these places.

JustGiving will give us the Gift Aid and PayPal is an option too.

What impact does your donation make?

We have longstanding relationships with theatre practitioners in Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria and more recently we have welcomed requests from Belarus, Ukraine and Jordan. We are hearing from them that our small grants are life changing and life saving.

We have recently managed to get funds to a young artist in Gaza who is at this moment sleeping on the ground in Rafah next to an orphaned child. They are living on biscuits and somehow surviving.

We have assisted a young group bringing dance to the camps in Gaza – they. call themselves Camps Breakerz Crew and you can see their wonderful dancing and teaching on YouTube via their website www.campsbreakers.com

Our theatre companies keep working and creating despite all the odds they face. Thatch House Initiative in Nairobi drove out to Bokkos on March 11th to take their show on its usual community tour, only to find the entire village empty with burnt houses. Nothing had been reported in the news so the tour was abruptly cancelled and they travelled back to the city.

The all female theatre company we support in Kenya sent us this recently:

“…we are happy to share that we did receive last week the grant, and are so excited and happy that it has always come at our deepest points of needs….. everything is being double taxed...no one is spared including artists and poor people...the cost of living has taken another level”. - 5Cs Theatre for Change and Development, Kenya

Fundraising News

We have started the new year with the initiative of asking all our loyal friends and Patrons if they would be prepared to make a regular monthly donation, or a one-off donation, to reach our target of £20,000 by the year end. So far we are delighted to say that several of you have dug deep and joined the campaign. We thank you – you know who you are! – and we want you to know that your contributions are going entirely to the people that need it, apart from our small wage to our hard-working secretary.

If you would like to join them in giving regularly please do get in touch.

We are also delighted to announce that Acting For Others have awarded us a very good donation and we are so very grateful to them including us on their list of charities. We are the only charity in the UK that helps performers outside of the UK, and we thank Acting For Others for recognising this and valuing us.

Legacy Giving: A Lasting Impact

Consider leaving a legacy to SafetyCurtain so that that our mission to support performers in crisis endures. Your legacy ensures that we can provide crucial assistance to performers in need, helping them to overcome challenges and continue to thrive in their craft. By leaving a legacy to SafetyCurtain, you're not only supporting performers in crisis but also preserving and enriching the performing arts for future generations. Your legacy will continue to inspire, empower, and transform lives long after you're gone.

Legacy gifts can be tax-efficient, potentially reducing the inheritance tax liability on your estate. Your solicitor can provide guidance on the most tax-efficient ways to leave a gift to charity.

We look forward to meeting you at our next fundraising event and meanwhile wish you all good health to you and yours.

Sincerely

Jo Cameron Brown, Chair

Mary Roscoe, Vice Chair

Maria Vasiliou, Secretary
